I took this photo last summer, just before they put in a cinder path from the East Lomond car park back down towards Glenrothes.
I have very mixed feelings about the new path. On one hand, access to and from Falkland Hill (or East Lomond – it’s known equally well by both names) is improved quite a lot for both older folk and those that have difficulty walking. But on the other hand, it looks so totally out of place and doesn’t fit in with the natural environment.
Having just checked all my recent photos, I’ve clearly made an effort not to include the new path in any of them. However, below is a photograph taken at the Glenrothes end of this walk which shows just a small portion of the cinder path.
Please let me know your opinions, cinder path or natural path?
I think the cinder path looks terrible but, on the other hand, if it was the only means to improve accessibility then I suppose it’s acceptable.

That’s my problem with it too, it looks awful, but if it means better accessibility, am I just being selfish by not wanting it? The other point is also, so many people just sit in the car park at the top, I’m not sure if the type of people it’s aimed to help, whether they would walk down there anyway, cinder path or no cinder path.

I’d prefer natural path but sometimes the cinder path will give more comforts to access it especially during the wet weather 🙂 Beautiful image of the aerial view! Just stunning to see the yellow and green together as a scenery 🙂

Thanks Indah 🙂 I must admit, I much preferred it when it was the natural path, whatever the weather.

I definitely know a lot of people who would be left out if not for the cinder path.

Glad you have a photo of the natural path. The change is unfortunate but probably needed to prevent ankle twists.

Thanks for the comment Janice 🙂 And you’re probably right about the ankle twists, people will sue someone else about almost anything these days 😦

I think that’s what the change is all about–it’s great that people are enjoying nature, but then the traffic increases and changes like this are made…

it is a real conundrum. When I put my selfish hat on, then I wish they would just leave it all as natural as possible. But unselfishly, I want as many people as possible to enjoy, and more importantly, appreciate the countryside 🙂

I like the fence and path of the first image. It tends to lead you well into the image.
