One of the places I really enjoy walking is a smallish circular walk from the Balbirnie Park, nr Glenrothes, through to Markinch, up to Star and Kirkforthar, and back to the back entrance of Balbirnie Park. This would definitely be classed as a ‘Happy Place‘ for me.
A few weeks ago, I had decided to do this walk. Heavy showers were forecast, but when I left there wasn’t a cloud in the sky. I’d taken my DSLR with me, thinking the showers wouldn’t appear until at least late afternoon. When I got to the back of Kirkforthar, the furthest point away from the car, a huge dark storm cloud loomed over the hill. Most times, I love the being out in the rain, especially during a storm, but NOT whilst I had my camera with me, and no bag to put it in!!
I virtually ran the four miles back to the car, this cloud steadily building behind me. I did stop a couple of times on the way up Cuinin Hill to take a few more photos, and got back to the car just as the first few heavy spots of rain started to fall.
Thankfully my camera remained dry and thus this still remains a ‘HAPPY PLACE’ for me 🙂
How exciting! I love the thrill of a storm and being out in it. So wild! Scotland has a great wild feeling about it. Been once in 1988.

It is a great place to live. Unfortunately, we don’t get all that much in the way of thunderstorms, but the scenery is both pretty and wild! Whereabouts did you stay in 1988?

Took the train from London to Edinburgh and then stayed with friends in Aberdeen (Americans going to the University at the time).

I’ve noticed that Scottish universities do have a fair number of Americans studying in them. Oddly enough, even though I worked in the oil industry for twelve years, I’ve not been to Aberdeen.

The sky and the lighting in these photos are amazing. I love the glow of the fields while the sky is so inky.

I’ve not seen such dark clouds for a while Laura, but they held off fortunately long enough for me to get back to the car at Balbirnie 🙂

These are wonderful Andy but I especially like the Approaching Storm photo. It reminds me of the remarkable contrasts in the landscape there, the golden grasses, deeply colored sky and green plantings. A funny aside – during our visit we played golf (with push trolleys) in a small course where the woman running the pro shop forecast no rain but suggested I take along a plastic bag “just in case; this is Scotland after all!”. On about the 5th hole the skies opened up and it began to POUR. We ran in pulling our carts as fast as possible, and the plastic bag saved my DSLR from disaster. It was a funny Scottish moment for us – yet another fond memory!

Thank you Tina 🙂 And I’m glad the Scottish women in the shop had the sense to give you a plastic bag, and your camera was kept dry 🙂 Whenever my parents come up to visit us from Cornwall, they always comment on how helpful and friendly the Scots are. Did you manage to finish your round of golf?

Thank you Noortje 🙂 If any of my photos can get even close to the standards of your photos, I’ll be a very happy man 🙂

Wow, that’s a dramatic sky! Well done for those photos, and for getting back to the car before the downpour!

Thanks Jo, I was lucky, both with being out in the right place at the right time, and with not getting wet! What saved me was there was a weather front coming up from the south, and the storm clouds were coming from the north. The storm won out, but it slowed down it’s approach quite dramatically, THANKFULLY!!!!

Stunning photographs! You must be in great physical condition, to run four miles. Kudos to you!

Thanks Vera 🙂 It was a slight exaggeration to say I ran the whole way, I did stop to take a couple of photos, and I walked briskly some of the way! Lol!
