As part of “Cee’s Fun Photo Challenge : Metal & Wood“, I’m posting 3 photographs taken in Glenrothes Town Park. This metal sculpture, called ‘Forest Screens’ was designed by the artist Malcolm Robertson in 1987. It was originally placed in the Glenwood Shopping Area, in a part of Glenrothes known as Macedonia, but was later moved to its present position in the Town Park.
It’s Macedonia that I grew up in (I should get a t-shirt that adds “and I survived”) so I know these well but they’ve definitely been given a thorough scrub and spruce up since I saw them last. I think they look rather lovelier in their new setting, don’t you?

I like the idea of the T shirt Laura!! Lol!!! 🙂 They certainly do look much nicer in the park rather than at the shops!

Thanks Debi 🙂 It is an interesting piece of art! It’s unfortunate that it’s placed in part of the town park where not all that many people go 😦

city planners often do strange things I’ve discovered, lol (they must have invented “Where’s Wally?”) 🙂

Lol!!! In this case you’re right Debi, but in general terms, Glenrothes town planners have designed, in my humble opinion, one of the best laid out towns in the UK (as ‘New Towns’ go, that is). I would totally agree with you Debi about most other city planners! Lol! 🙂

Aren’t these great, Andy? A work of art that also can be a child’s playground, an adult’s contemplative art and relaxation subject and something through which we can see different light and viewpoints. That is multi-tasking!!! LOL!! I really like them.

Thanks Amanda 🙂 Wow, does that mean I was at long last multi-tasking!!! Lol!!! I didn’t think men were capable of that! 🙂
Or did you mean that the artwork is multi-tasking! That seems more like it! Lol!! 🙂
On a slightly more serious note, we actually have quite a lot of various bits of art/sculptures around Glenrothes, I’m hoping to do a series of posts about them in the relatively near future 🙂

I have seen some of those fabulour distinctive sculptures in the park already on your blog and if they are anything to go by, there must be some really talented planners and artists there.

The town council actually had two resident artists working for them between 1969 and 1990, and between them they must have produced over 150 pieces, some of which are quite small, but others are of a reasonable size! I think one or two other artists also contributed pieces of street art after 1990 🙂

Wow. The town council sounds amazingly supportive of the Arts!

It certainly was for a good number of years Amanda 🙂 They concentrate more on their floral displays in more recent years, Glenrothes has won the ‘Best Town Floral Display’ competition a few times now, I think the competition runs throughout the UK 🙂

Ah, now that might indicate the age of the people who are now members of the council?

I must confess I have no real idea, Amanda, who makes up the council now, or back then, but it would suggest they had younger council members a few years ago!! LOL! 🙂

I think both you and the artwork were multi tasking!!!!! Hehe!!! Always a first time, hey? Lol! And I am sure men do multi-task, but the some research says that it is not good for our concentration to multi-task so who wants to tempt that? As we are getting older anyway and concentration can be a challenge!

I quite agree Amanda, just concentrating is plenty enough of a challenge for me! Lol!! 🙂
I’ve never been great at multi tasking, except when I was in charge of the geology labs, then it was easy, but that’s probably because I really enjoyed it, especially when we were really busy 🙂

I love sculpture gardens and these photos are lovely. I never thought of doing “wood” with metal, so this is quite a creative innovation. xo

Thank you Sabiscuit 🙂 It is quite an innovative piece of art. We are lucky in Glenrothes, we have a multitude of pieces of art scattered throughout the town 🙂

It is beautiful Gilly, and you’re right, it’s in a far better spot now (even if it is in an obscure part of the town park) than it was in the shopping area! 🙂 As I’ve said a couple of times in previous comments, at the risk of boring everyone, I’m going to do a series of posts in the relatively near future on the various (and numerous) pieces of public art found in public places in Glenrothes 🙂
