Cee’s Compose Yourself Photo Challenge : Centrepoint – Breaking the Rule of Thirds

As part of this weeks Cee’s Compose Yourself Photo Challenge, I have enclosed seven photos where the focal point of the photograph is at the ‘Centrepoint‘ of the image, and thus breaking the rule of thirds. The three flower photographs, because of their circular nature, make placing them at the centre an obvious choice.

The three insect photographs work fine, because there is nothing else of interest in the photo. If the insects were flying, they generally look better slightly off centre.

In the final photograph, the small baby fern growing between the wooden logs of the kids climbing frame is the focal point of the photo, and from the shape of the play frame, it’s sensible to have it at the centre.

      • Oh it’s been my pet project for the past year, I’m self-publishing, and had a professional design and edit done. I have sent my final round of revisions through yesterday. Would you like a copy of my PDF? (The PDF is as close to the final version as can be, I’ve just been fine-tuning it for the print version. Though I totally understand if you don’t read poetry, it’s not everyone’s cup of tea! My husband has not read it, it’s too many words he says!

      • I would be very honoured to see a copy of your poetry Vonita 🙂 I won’t pretend to know that much about poetry, but I enjoy reading it sometimes, the few verses I’ve read of yours have all so far really appealed to me 🙂

      • I’ll email it to you! It’s filled with images too so it’s not a black and white words only book! I love it (if I do say so myself), I read it on my iPhone sometimes. (I get to read my own book, how cool is that?) The first poem The Light is the first poem I wrote in October 2013, and then I had a case of verbal diarrhea and ended up with a book and a blog! (Actually two books, because I did my own design with personal photos and printed it last year for my family as Christmas presents), using mostly photos from my aunt’s amateur photography collection on fb. I included pics of my mother and nieces and children etc. And then worked with a professional designer (who happens to be an old school friend of mine from the convent, we are connected on fb) to create my new version. Which has given me the idea to offer it on my blog, I’ll post an invite later. Will send it through to you today (it takes about forty minutes to read the whole version, it looks longer than it actually is) 🙂

      • That’s fantastic Vonita, I can’t wait to see it now 🙂 I’m guessing it’ll take me a wee bit longer than 40 minutes to read, but I’ll enjoy looking at it over the Christmas period 🙂 It’s brilliant that you have managed to publish two books, I wish I could get a bout of verbal diarrhoea when I write some of my posts! Lol!! That’s great that you know someone who could give you a professional design, it makes a big difference to how well a book is received by the general public! 🙂

      • You’ll be pleased to know I got the PDF, and it’s left me almost speechless Vonita! It’s absolutely brilliant, stunning, fantastic and a lot more to boot. The layout is really professional, you could easily sell copies of it on the likes of Amazon! I’ve only read the first introduction and the first poem ‘The Light’ and I’m now really looking forward to reading the rest of it!!!!! The photographs for the backgrounds are superb, as is the front cover designs!! 🙂
        If you need any previews done, just point me in the right directions, I’d be more than happy to do that! 🙂

      • Wow, Andy, this is high praise indeed! Thank you for your wonderful comments. The plan is to have it on all online bookstores, and available PDF, ebook and print, but without paying for marketing, I am not thinking it will sell. (I originally paid for a very expensive marketing package, but the publishing team couldn’t get the design right, even after I had my own design done and provided them with indesign files) so I changed companies and fortunately received my money back). It has cost me quite a lot to produce, so I make sure I read it and enjoy it as much as I can!

      • You are most welcome Vonita, you deserve all the praise for such a great book! As soon as you send it to any online publisher, let me know, and I’ll happily write you a review 🙂
        I know it’s hard to do your own marketing, it’s a very time consuming process, or costly process if you get someone else to do it for you (and even then, you really need to know the marketeers will do a proper job, many are scammers 😦 unfortunately).
        But I’ve heard that if you can get four or five people to review your book on sites such as Amazon, it really improves your rating for the book!

      • Oh that’s excellent to know, thank you! I’m waiting for the final round of revisions and then it takes a few weeks to be loaded onto Amazon, so maybe it will be in February – March! I will take you up on the offer then, thank you! I’ve removed a few pages to reduce the size to 90 as the printing cost is so expensive (also ripped out the 5 pages of table of contents and replacing it with a single page with only the different parts listed), and a few other minor changes like that. Also they’ve resized the layout, and recreated it using the PDF as a sample, so it is not going to be exactly the same, but will be close enough! Close enough that I am still happy with it and I’ve done minor word changes along the way that will be unnoticeable to anyone else but me, but it makes me happy that I’ve done that!

      • It sounds brilliant Vonita, and I love the way you talk about the book, it’s like a baby to you, it’s fantastic how enthusiastic you are!!! I’ve just found a blog/podcast that I listened to a couple of years ago, the guy doing the podcast was writing travel ebooks to fund his trips around the world. Unfortunately he’s stopped podcasting now, but the hints and tips he gave about publishing etc were very good!! The link to the blog is

        I would recommend you have a listen to at least a few of the podcasts, they may be a wee bit out of date, but most of what he says I would guess is still pretty much relevant! 🙂

  13. The macros are lovely: the wasps and the beetle. But the one that I really like is the last. It’s not just the centre, it’s the vertical centre line between the two logs, and the horizontal centre line of the focus. Really nice.

  16. These photos are very beautiful and so full of colour they make me long for summer again. Daisy, dandelion, wasp and ladybird – all perfect for your ‘Centrepoint’ challenge. I really like that lonely little fern, too. Belfarg Woods looks like a wonderful place for a walk.

    • They certainly do make you long for summer Millie. Still, another 3 months and Spring will be well under way! 🙂
      Balfarg Woods are a nice place, but they are only fairly small, it’s a wooded area between housing estates in Glenrothes. That is one of the fantastic design features of Glenrothes, I’ve never known a town with more wooded areas and grassed areas, from a distance you would never know that Glenrothes has a population of over 40k people.

    The wasp is absolutely gorgeous! Look at those colours! Stunning capture of it Andy. The Spot Ladybird is just as adorable. 😀
