View from Calton Hill in Edinburgh, with the Dugald Stewart Monument in the foreground, and Edinburgh Castle, the Balmoral Hotel (and clock tower), and the Scott monument in the background.
The Dugald Stewart Monument is a memorial to the Scottish philosopher and mathematician, who is best known for popularising the Scottish Enlightenment. The Scottish Enlightenment or Enlichtenment, was a period in 18th and early 19th century Scotland that was characterised by an outpouring of intellectual and scientific accomplishments.
Dugald Stewart (1753-1828) was a professor at the University of Edinburgh, holding the chair of moral philosophy from 1786 until his death in June 1828. Among Stewart’s pupils were Lord Palmerston, Sir Walter Scott, Francis Jeffrey, Henry Thomas Cockburn, Francis Horner, Sydney Smith, John William Ward, Lord Brougham, Dr. Thomas Brown, James Mill, Sir James Mackintosh and Sir Archibald Alison, all of whom were to become leading figures in their respective fields, not just in Scotland, but throughout the world.
Following his death, the Royal Society of Edinburgh commissioned the building of the monument, which was completed in Aug 1831.
What beautiful composition… very eye appealing! And thank you (as always) for the wonderful history lesson, Andy! 😀

Glad you liked it Lori, Edinburgh is a beautiful city, it’s hard to go too far wrong with the photography! Lol! 🙂
I was pleased to look up the history of the monument Lori, it’s a very popular spot for photographer to go to, but I hadn’t known what the monument was all about until this evening 🙂

It is a wonderful city Martina, what’s left of the old part …………….. unfortunately, quite a lot of the older warehouses etc have been pulled down in recent years, and new office blocks put up in their place 😦

Sorry 😦 The greedy people always destroy the historical site to build the skyscraper. I love visiting the very old city 🙂

Even though it’s got stunning views of Edinburgh, Calton Hill is often overlooked by visitors, Rajiv

Goodness he achieved a high flying role in his career at a tender age. This is a stunning view of the city Andy, did you saturate those yellow hues or were they that bright, either way it works really well.

Lol!!! Well spotted!! You noticed the editing Gilly, it was actually a film effect that I was using, the Kodak Kodachrome 25 setting on the film simulation plugin for Raw Therapee, it really boosted the yellows, which like you, I thought looked quite effective for this photo 🙂

Thanks Janet, it is an amazing place to view Edinburgh from. There are quite a few stunning viewpoints in Edinburgh, I’ll have to get up a few more………… Arthur’s Seat (ancient volcanic plug) springs to mind, as does the Walter Scott monument in Princes Street 🙂
