Just to the west of one of the most picturesque villages in Fife, lies Falkland School. The area surrounding the school was once part of the Falkland Estate, and has a few of the remaining architectural features which were built in the 19th century, including this fine bridge, which crosses the Maspie Burn (a small stream approx 3ft wide!!)
We love walking Mapsie Den. There are lots of great routes through the estate and none are disappointing. My now 8 year old once fell into the burn and was absolutely soaked.

It certainly is beautiful all around that part of the Lomond Hills Laura. Have you walked across to the Tyndall Bruce Monument?

I have done but not for many years. I really ought to have taken the kids on that walk. When I was very wee, I was obsessed with learning to spell the name Onesiphorus Tyndall Bruce so I’ve always had a soft spot for him as a result.

Now I’ve just learnt something new, I didn’t know the first name of Tyndall Bruce, or for that matter, how to spell it! 🙂

I’m now paranoid that I misspelled it after all these years. I think I’m right though. There’s a statue of him in the grounds of the church in Falkland, just opposite the central fountain.

I had seen the statue, just didn’t realise that’s who it was 😦

Phew! I got it right. Here’s a wee potted biography of him:

Thanks Laura 🙂 He sounds like he may have been a bit of an idiot when he was younger (his parents weren’t great either, being part of the slave trade), but sounds like he improved Falkland later on in life.

Oops. I got so caught up in memories I forgot to actually comment on your photo. It’s a really strong composition with the sweeping curve and the various repeated patterns.

That’s okay Laura, I’m just pleased that the photo evoked some pleasant memories (even if your 8 year old’s memories of Maspie aren’t quite so pleasant)

Cracking shot, Andy. I remember coming across Mapsie Den, and feeling as if I’d stumbled into a magical place.

It certainly is a magical place Lorna. It’s a shame I’ve still not managed to photo any elves or faeries up there yet 🙂
